The retina is the thin layer of light sensitive nerve tissue (actually the front of the brain) at the back of the eye.
The central area of the retina is dedicated to detailed vision (chart vision, reading, fine discrimination) and is known as the macula.
The remainder of the retina provides the wide overview and side vision important in the coordination of the eyes, navigation, night vision and overall awareness of surrounds and motion.
